BIC CORPORATE FOUNDATION PARTNERS WITH THE FRENCH NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR UNESCO AND CARTOONING FOR PEACE
Between 2020 and 2022, close to 500 students from middle-schools and high-schools who are members of the UNESCO Associated School Network in France will work with press cartoonists from the nonprofit Cartooning for Peace.
The objective of this initiative, led by the French National Commission for UNESCO and thanks to the sponsorship of the BIC Corporate Foundation, is to foster a culture of discussion and debate, as well as to raise awareness of the importance of free speech among students. Cartoonists will lead workshops following the teaching method developed by Cartooning for Peace, which helps students understand press cartoons and express their opinion with an argumentative basis. By developing their critical thinking, students expand their knowledge of societal challenges both in France and worldwide. The workshop also gives them the chance to start drawing their own cartoons and launch their own artistic adventure.
Cartooning for Peace also produced educational material, including a guide for teachers and other literature addressing fundamental themes of society: freedom of speech, censorship, women and children’s rights, discrimination and our planet’s future. One section is also dedicated to the Addis-Abeba Declaration, in which press cartoons are recognized as a fundamental right.
The BIC Corporate Foundation decided to support this project as it promotes the development of critical thinking and drawing, two essential elements in support of the BIC Foundation’s mission of promoting education for all.
