REFORESTATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
NGO Name: Nebeday
Pillar: Environmental Education
Funding Period: 2019-2021
Senegal experiences levels of deforestation equal to 300 football fields per day due to strong population growth and economic development. Natural resources have been overexploited, disrupting the entire natural balance through the disappearance of species, soil depletion, endangerment of marine and forest resources and more. This creates a vicious circle of poverty for the communities that depend on it.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Nébéday's project strengthens environmental education in the Senegalese school curriculum and raises awareness among children through a reforestation campaign. Students learn in workshops about biology and the environment, plant trees at their schools and in their villages and are responsible for tending them.Near the end of the school year, the students whose trees have grown the most are rewarded by participating in a five-day excursion with other students from across the country to learn about Senegal's mangrove trees.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS
"We are delighted with the partnership with BIC because BIC and Nebeday have a common goal: to find ways for future generations to be better than those past."
- Jean Goepp, director of Nebeday.
